About Us

Growing a Stronger Community

Kitchen 49 and Garden 49 are the culinary and food production social enterprises of the Red Deer Food Bank, working together to grow food, create opportunities and support our community.

Garden 49 grows fresh produce year-round for Food Bank clients and our community, while Kitchen 49 transforms food into meals, culinary experiences and opportunities to learn. Through catering, food trucks, cooking classes, locally grown produce and house-made products, we also generate revenue that goes back into supporting the work of the Red Deer Food Bank.

Together, we're creating a more sustainable way to feed our community today while building skills, opportunities and food security for tomorrow.

Kitchen 49

Kitchen 49 is where food, creativity and community come together. Led by our team of Red Seal Chefs, our professional kitchen is home to catering, food trucks, culinary classes, community food programming and much more.

Our culinary team creates memorable food experiences for everything from weddings and corporate events to community gatherings and hands-on classes. Behind the scenes, the kitchen also helps the Red Deer Food Bank make better use of available food by transforming ingredients into nutritious, ready-to-use meals and products.

Whether we're cooking for an event, teaching a new skill or preparing food for our community, everything we do at Kitchen 49 has a purpose beyond the plate.

Garden 49

Our greenhouse department has been around since 2023 and recently adopted the name Garden 49 as their team and operations continued to expand..

The team currently maintains:

  • A geodesic dome greenhouse used for education and testing
  • Two hydroponic seacans - a lettuce farm and a leafy greens farm.
  • A hydroponic cherry tomato farm capable of producing around 400,000 tomatos a year.
  • A microgreens business supplying microgreens to local businesses.

Garden 49 is in the process of expanding to additional vegetable farms, and they also work closely with local growers and community gardens.
